How to Choose a Reputable Dog Breeder
The Shetland Sheepdog, also known as the Sheltie, is a beautiful dog with an abundant mane and frill. These dogs are extremely popular and are therefore subject to indiscriminate breeders looking to make money off this popularity.
When looking to purchase a Sheltie, look for registered Shetland sheepdog breeders or at the very least, as a veterinarian about reputable kennels or breeders. There are various websites that can also be helpful in the search for Shetland sheepdog breeders. Some very important things to look for are healthy blood lines and in-breeding. Shelties are susceptible to various eye problems as well as von Willebrand disease. These problems can be greatly reduced by making certain that the line from which you adopt your puppy is clear of such issues.
There are some other simple questions one can ask to find a reputable Shetland sheepdog breeder. Know as much about the breed you’re adopting as possible. Questions about the breed’s size, characteristics, and possible health problems as well as the breed’s needs in proper care and exercise. Responsible breeders should be able to prove how they have been able to avoid any health issues through testing. All these questions should be easy to answer for knowledgeable, reputable breeders. They should also be able to provide verifiable records and registration with AKC or other well known breeder’s club and veterinary clinic for health purposes.
Reputable breeders freely offer information regarding birth of the puppies, the health of the puppies, how they are introduced to children and other dogs. They are also free with volunteering assistance if needed once the puppy has been adopted or purchased. There are several other signals, such as condition of location where puppies are kept, interest in the home where the puppy will grow up, the number of different breeds (should be no more than three to four) that are bred, etc.
Finally, Shetland sheepdog breeders who are reputable and responsible will be able to provide you with written information up to three generations of the line from which your puppy comes. They will provide basic diet and health information, documentation regarding shots and spaying or neutering, and a properly executed registration certificate. If you don’t know what these are, then it would be a good idea to do your homework before searching out a breeder.
Shelties can be great family dogs and to ensure that you get the dog you’re looking for, be as discriminate about your new puppy as you would about any other important decision that pertains to your family.
